Launched in 2006, this program aims at mobilizing governments, companies, and third-sector organizations to fight, in a more effective manner, child and adolescent sexual exploitation on Brazilian roadways. Over 1,230 companies signed the Corporate Pact affirming their commitment to the cause. One of its main strategies is the Continuous Education Project for Truck Drivers, which, by means of information, is working on education, raising awareness, and qualification of people who directly or indirectly work on the roads. The main goal is to reach the truck driver and transform him into a children and adolescents’ protection agent.

Big Constructions and Commercial Sexual Exploitation Program

The goal of the program is to mobilize governments, companies, and social organizations to fight sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in infrastructure works carried out in Brazil, while highlighting the importance of imparting knowledge and extending the debate around the infrastructure works in Brazil. Besides major environmental issues, a crucial consideration is to ensure child and adolescents protection. Childhood Brasil, in partnership with the Center for Sustainability Studies from Fundação Getúlio Vargas, are developing a method to identify and compile indicators for data survey and supervision of municipalities that will host big constructions being developed with the collaboration of 14 Brazilian companies. One of the project goals is to create and apply tools that can contribute towards an innovative model to encourage local and regional development.

Tourism program

This program promotes inter-sector actions to prevent and fight sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in tourism, mobilizing the touristic trade and consolidating public policies in the sector. Within the program is a project that aims at contributing to the implementation and strengthening of public policies that focus on fighting sexual violence against children and adolescents to ensure their rights in the Northeast region of Brazil. Another project focuses on qualification of young leaders to act as mobilizers in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in tourism.

Communication Program

The Communication Program focuses on mobilizing, informing, preventing, and educating the society on sexual violence against children and adolescents. Communication is used as a strategic tool for the mobilization, information, prevention, and education of society on sexual abuse and exploitation of children. Communication is also used to start a dialogue with partner organizations, the society, journalists, and communication students. The program aims to guarantee the quality of the information produced and promoted, to increase presence in the media as source of information regarding issues connected to children at risk for abuse, scale up actions from projects to reach a wider audience, and to work with public awareness management to provide consistent information about Childhood, its programs, results and mission.

Support to community-based organizations

Childhood Brasil provides technical and financial support to NGOs throughout Brazil, developing a network of experiences and actions against all forms of sexual violence. Additionally, it systematizes and disseminates methodologies for projects that may evolve in other regions. This program aims to boost different initiatives, helping to build a big network of actions for the protection of children and adolescents in Brazil. In 2012, Childhood Brasil supported 15 projects throughout the country in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Amazonas, Pará, Pernambuco e Distrito Federal.

Network for Protection Program

The program strengthens the System to Safeguard Children and Adolescents’ Rights (SSCAR) by qualifying professionals to integrate and effectively protect and assist children and adolescents in sexual violence situations. The SSCAR coordinates and integrates civil society and government public authorities when applying normative rulings and triggering the mechanisms of promotion, defense, and control to make children and adolescents’ rights effective in Federal, State, City, and District levels. The project Laços de Proteção (Protection Ties) is building awareness and qualifying the professionals working for the SSCAR to prevent and report sexual violence situations. The Special Deposition methodology is also implemented in order to educate the Brazilian Judiciary System to qualify professionals in interview techniques to offer children and adolescents a protected and friendly environment for their testimonials instead of the hearing rooms; with the National Council of Justice (CNJ) of Brazil as strategic partner.

Online Surfing

The program focuses on the protection of children and adolescents against online abuse and pornography via information and communication technology, and the distribution of the handbook Navegar com Segurança [Safe Online Surfing], released in 2006. The publication is intended for parents and educators, offering guidelines to prevent online abuse and the spread of child and adolescent pornography on the Internet. 900,000 printed copies, besides the digital version, have been downloaded from Childhood Brasil’s website. The handbook’s 3rd edition was released in 2012. The project actions include conference and events’ attendance, strategies for prevention and protection of children and adolescents on the Internet with Brazilian companies and partnership with Google for online safety content of the Internet.

World Cup 2014, Olympic Games 2016

Childhood Brasil believes that the World Cup and the Olympics offer suitable platforms to elevate the awareness of the society regarding “childhood protection”, engaging civil society, bringing visibility to the issue, contributing to governmental actions, and leaving a positive legacy for Brazil and the world as a result of the events. This project is contributing to the discussion of how the 2014 World Cup can leave a positive legacy for a childhood free from sexual exploitation and has three specific parts: to bring more visibility to the cause; to engage the private sector for the cause; and, to stimulate actions for a Childhood Free from Sexual Exploitation in the host-cities.
