Last week, the counselling centre “Kind im Zentrum” (Child in the centre) moved to new facilities in Berlin Wedding. It moved from a fairly small and dark building in the centre of Berlin to generous and light rooms outside the centre. KiZ is a counselling centre for sexually abused children and their families. The centre uses a holistic approach and offers services and help for all persons involved in a case. Parents and professionals can get advice, and children and offenders can receive therapy. If someone suspects that a child is being abused, KiZ offers advisory help.
Childhood Germany has known KiZ and the agency it belongs to – EJF, an evangelic youth welfare service – since 2003. We funded KiZ for several years and through several projects. For us, this is a good way to work! When we have a partner we know, and above all, when we know the quality of their work, we often cooperate in more than one project. And if the project is successful and we see that it can be transferred and help even more children, we try to support this process too.
KiZ decided to transfer its methods and holistic concept to support abused children, from Berlin to the smaller and rurally situated Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt – a federal state in the former GDR. Since there were no specialized counselling centres for abused children in Saxony-Anhalt, Childhood saw the need for a centre and decided to fund KiZ.
To me this is a good example of how Childhood works! As the concept of KiZ is quite close to how child advocacy centres in for instance the USA and Brazil operate, we are now thinking about how the centres network can share ideas and experiences with KiZ – with the overall goal to enhance the support to abused children all over the world.
