Girls
Research supports that girls are more vulnerable than boys to the effects of mistreatment and violence. This often results in sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and trafficking. In addition, girls have the added risk of early pregnancies, which make education, learning life skills and work more difficult. The number of young, single mothers is increasing.
In Eastern Europe, young mothers who have grown up in institutions often end up in a vicious cycle of institutionalization. Up to 75 percent of these young mothers lose their own children to a life in institutions.
What does Childhood do for girls at risk?
Many of Childhood’s projects have girls and young mothers as their primary focus. Their needs are many, and Childhood strives to offer the means to build the self-confidence they need to become strong and independent individuals, able to make the right decisions for the future. By helping young mothers, Childhood helps the next generation.
USA
Childhood USA supports one project in the US that specifically is directed to helping girls, the Young Women's Empowerment Project in San Francisco (listed on right). It is well know that girls that are exposed to violence and abuse have a higher likelihood of coming in to contact with the juvenile justice system. Once they are connected with this system, many girls are marginalized with few resources available to help them move beyond abusive situations. In addition, girls who experience abuse are also at a higher risk for early motherhood, which is one indicator of later social and economic poverty. Together with the sister foundations, Childhood USA supports programs that promote preventive efforts to help this groups of girls and plans to direct special efforts to hightligh their special vulnerabilities..
