Childhood USA does not have an official form for applications. However, guidelines describing what to include in a proposal can be downloaded (see links below) including project proposal and reporting guidelines, as well as a budget template. Childhood accepts written applications in English that are sent either via e-mail, fax, or regular mail. Childhood does not accept applications from private individuals.

USA
Childhood USA has maintained a stable project portfolio over the last few years, starting with one project in 2003 and expanding to a total of 13 by 2007.  Since then, Childhood USA has stabilized the funding process in order to make strategic investments in Better Practices models and evidence-based programs. A first step included encouraging new initiatives with organizations that already received funding, but also to selectively seek out and solicit organizations that had invested in finding new ways to serve Childhood's target population. For 2010, Childhood USA is maintaining this focus and its current portfolio with an ambition to incorporate new projects with new organizations over the next 12-18 months.  Details of this process will be posted mid-year 2010.

At this time, Childhood USA is keeping with the last two years plan of not soliciting any new proposals as the expansion will be based on available funding.  However, organizations located in the US that would like to find out about the funding process should contact the Childhood USA office to obtain details on how to proceed and when the next review and approval deadline for projects is scheduled. Ordinarily, all projects are approved both by the Childhood USA Board of Directors and the Swedish Board of Directors. The US office will also respond to and forward inquiries from organizations seeking funding intended for other countries to our sister offices in Sweden, Brazil and Germany.

While the Childhood Sweden office carries the ultimate responsibility for the global project portfolio, the three country offices approve and administer (monitor and evaluate) projects in their respective countries together with the Sweden office and project staff. Applications for funding outside of the US should be directed to the Childhood Sweden office, and for information on how to apply for funding in Germany and Brazil, please contact these offices, see below.

Project proposals submitted to Childhood USA are reviewed following these steps:
  • Childhood staff receives and reviews the application and identifies if the projects falls within set parameters for target groups and projects currently supported by Childhood.
  • The process includes a dialogue with the applying organization to clarify any questions that might have arisen
  • In most cases, fact finding missions including on-site visits are conducted to obtain first-hand information of the organization and the project/s.
  • A continuous dialogue is conducted with the Childhood Sweden Project staff to place the project within the global project portfolio.
  • The proposal is thereafter presented to a Project committee, which after internal discussions makes a recommendation to the Childhood USA Board of Directors.
  • If approved, the proposal is submitted to the Childhood Sweden Board of Directors to obtain final approval.
  • All projects are evaluated and monitored on an ongoing basis.

Childhood only accepts applications for projects in the following countries:

Belarus, Brazil, Estonia, China, Cambodia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Sweden, South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine and the United States.
